Saranac Lake Departures

The Adirondack Scenic Railroad has enjoyed many years of growing ridership and happy faces on train excursions between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid.

The Adirondack Railway Preservation Society (ARPS), operator of the Railroad, is in litigation with New York State regarding the use of the Remsen-Lake Placid Travel Corridor between Tupper Lake and Lake Placid. In 2016, New York State finalized a flawed plan to remove 34 miles of railroad in favor of constructing a recreational trail, displacing both the Adirondack Scenic Railroad and Rail Explorers USA. At this time the outcome of the proceedings are unknown and, to date, New York State has not offered us a permit for use. At this time, it is still unknown as to whether train operations between Saranac Lake and Lake Placid will resume.

For now, we hope our patrons will ride with us departing from Utica or Old Forge (Thendara), enjoying scenic excursions through the beautiful Adirondack Park. To learn more about the debate surrounding the rail line and help ensure it’s future, please visit our
