Refund Policy

The Adirondack Scenic Railroad does not offer refunds. If you are unable to make your scheduled departure, ride credit will be offered for the full amount paid for tickets, excluding processing fees. Ride credit is good for up to one year and subject to availability. Date exchanges are offered and subject to availability – limit 2 date changes.

Q: How long is the train ride?
A: The train ride is approximately an hour and a half round trip.

Q: Where is Remsen?
A: Remsen, NY is a small town just north of Utica, NY.

Q: I have some mobility concerns, is this trip handicapped friendly?
A: Unfortunately, this trip is not wheelchair accessible. There is no wheelchair boarding in the Holland Patent Station; however, there is in Remsen. If passengers with mobility concerns can manage a few stairs to initially board the train and deboard in Holland Patent, we can assist in boarding and deboarding in Remsen.

Beer & Wine

Q: Where is Remsen?
A: Remsen is a small town in New York with its station located 20 miles north of Utica, NY. The original station was built in the early 1850’s, the present station is a replica constructed in 1999 by Remsen Development Corporation.

Q: How long are we stopped at Remsen Station and what do we do during the stop in Remsen?
A: We stop for about 30 minutes. Feel free to disembark the train to stretch your legs while our crew switches the engine of the train from one end to the other to pull us back to Utica Station. Inside Remsen Depot there are items in the gift shop available for purchase, as well as a concession stand and restrooms.

Q: What is the difference between First Class and coach?
A: In addition to your wine and beer tasting, First Class passengers enjoy hot appetizers along with a variety of snacks and table service. All First Class passengers will have table seating and also have the ability to roam the cars to enjoy the music in the baggage car. In addition to buying a bottle of wine, First Class passengers may also choose to buy wine by the glass.

Q: Can we bring our own alcohol?
A: New York State law prohibits bringing any carry on alcoholic beverages on board the train. We reserve the right to check any bags before the train to ensure that no outside alcohol is brought on the train.

Q: Is there any hard alcohols or liquors served on the train?
A: No. Bags may be checked to ensure that no outside alcohol is brought on the train.

Q: I smoke, is there a dedicated place for me to have a cigarette?
A: Smoking is prohibited in every car and vestibule on the train. However, smoking is allowed outside on the platform before you depart. Please remember to deposit your cigarette butts responsibly.

Q: Is this trip wheelchair-accessible?
A: Yes, with some exceptions. Please take not the restrooms on board are not handicap accessible. If you are bringing a wheelchair, we request that you please notify us when you make your reservation. The wheelchair must be in a normal standard size. Unfortunately large scooters or motorized wheelchairs can’t be accommodated as they are too wide for our aisles. Please arrive earlier than the recommended arrival time to allow for extra time for boarding.

Q: Is there food available?
A: We provide light snacks (chips dip, cheese, crackers, etc.) while on the train. There are additional snacks for purchase at the Remsen Depot. In addition to the snacks mentioned above, First Class passengers also receive two hot appetizers. For Special arrangements due to diabetic or allergies please inquire when you make your reservation.

Q: Are bottles of wine available to purchase after the train for us to take home?
A: No, a bottle purchased while on the train must be consumed or disposed of before disembarking the train.

Q: Are there any discounts for large groups?
A: There are special group rates available for groups over 25 people. Please contact us well in advance of your trip to make sure that we are able to accommodate the size of your group.

Utica to Thendara With Layover

Q: Where is Thendara?
A: Thendara, NY is a small town located a mile south of Old Forge, NY.

Q: What is there to do in Old Forge?
A: We recommend a visit to the Old Forge tourism website, www.oldforgeny.com for local attractions. There is plenty to see and do!

Q: Can we ride the train up one day, spend the night, and then come back on the train at a later date?
A: Absolutely! We suggest a stay over at either the Water’s Edge Hotel or at the Old Forge Camping Resort. However, the return trip must be made the same week as your departure from Utica. Please contact the ticket office with any additional questions: (315) 724-0700

A: The Adirondack Scenic Railroad provides a shuttle bus service that will drop passengers off in downtown Old Forge and local attractions. The shuttle bus service is available for the duration of your layover.

Q: I have some mobility concerns, is this trip handicapped friendly?
A: No. This train is not suitable for people with mobility concerns. No wheelchair ramp or lift is available for deboarding in Remsen and the restaurant is 70 yards from the train, over a grassy lawn.

Q: I smoke, is there a dedicated place for me to have a cigarette?
A: Smoking is prohibited in every car and vestibule on the train. However, smoking is allowed outside on the platform before you depart. Please remember to deposit your cigarette butts responsibly.

Utica to Big Moose

Q: Where is Big Moose?
A: Big Moose is located north of Thendara and Old Forge, south of Inlet. The train stops at the restored Big Moose Station for a relaxing lunch. Visit www.bigmoosestation.com for more details.

Q: Will we have time to stop in Old Forge?
A: Unfortunately, this trip does not allow time to stop in Old Forge. If you are looking for a train from Utica to Old Forge, we recommend one of our Utica to Thendara trips which offers shuttle service into Old Forge.

Q: How do we get into Old Forge?
A: The Adirondack Scenic Railroad provides a shuttle bus service that will drop passengers off in downtown Old Forge and local attractions. The shuttle bus service is available for the duration of your layover. Please take note that the shuttle bus is not handicap accessible. We can accommodate if passengers with mobility concerns can manage a few stairs to board and deboard.

A: Peak change length lasts for different amounts of time each year. This is reliant on elevation, weather, and temperature change as the season progresses. In years past the best time to see the fall colors is late September into early to late October. We cannot make accurate predictions on when peak will be for the coming year.

Q: Am I guaranteed to see the fall colors?
A: Since the color change is dependent on elevation, weather, and temperature change, we cannot guarantee that you will see full color change. If you have booked a train past the time of peak change or when all the leaves have fallen, there is still plenty to view. Deer frequent the area around the tracks and bears become more active late into October. Also keep an eye out for geese and other migrating birds as they fly south for the winter.

Q: Can we ride the train up one day, spend the night, and then come back on the train at a later date?
A: Absolutely! We suggest a stay over at ether the Water’s Edge Inn or at the Old Forge Camping Resort . However, the return trip must be made the same week as your departure from Utica. The Polar Express™

Q: How long is the trip?
A: The POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride is approximately two hours, round trip.

Q: Where does the train go?
A: The train will travel north to the Holland Patent Depot, decorated as the North Pole.

Q: Are there bathrooms on the train?
A: Yes, there are bathrooms in most train cars.

Q: Will it be cold?
A: We recommend dressing for the weather. While boarding the train, you and your family will be outside on the train platform for a few minutes; however, our coaches are climate controlled.

Q: Can we switch days?
A: Reservations may only be switched to a different day, subject to availability. Please be advised that The POLAR EXPRESS™ Train Ride does sell out every year and available seating does tend to be limited.

Q: Do people actually wear their pajamas?
A: Yes, most children and many adults wear their pajamas.

Q: I’m traveling with a group, can we all sit together?
A: All people reserved under one name will be seated together, provided they remain together in the boarding line. If you would like to be seated with a party who has reserved under another name, please contact our office toll-free at 1-800-819-2291 to notify us of your seating preference. All parties must remain together in the boarding line.

Adirondack Christmas Train

Q: Where is Thendara?
A: Thendara, NY is a small town located a mile south of Old Forge, NY. Thendara Station is 52 miles north of Utica, NY and is the station that serves the Old Forge area.

Q: Does this train go all the way into Old Forge?
A: This train goes to our Thendara Station and not all the way into Old Forge. The Adirondack Scenic Railroad provides a shuttle bus service that is complementary and takes you the rest of the way into downtown Old Forge and to other local attractions. The shuttle bus service is available for the full duration of your layover.

Q: Will the train be hot/cold?
A: The train is climate controlled for you comfort.

Q: It’s a long train ride. Is there food available in case we get hungry?
A: The café car will be open on the train for food and beverages as you travel to the Thendara Station.
